In South Africa, people's homes in underprivileged communities are being demolished by local governments due to not being approved by local council. Legislation states that approval is only granted if planned by a registered professional – a cost far out of reach for poorer communities. AfriSam's press ads were turned into architectural plans for low-cost homes, which can be physically submitted for council approval and used to build directly from by a certified builder – legally.

Democratising architecture through open-source home building plans.

Module-based building for multiple configurations.

Plan (a) is a low-cost, low-material use plan designed to be built in modules. Through its modularity, multiple home configurations can be built off of one plan, whether it’s a one, two or three bedroom home.

This also gives people the power to build what they need, when they need it. From starting small, to extending as their family grows, or building it to fit their available space right now.
